LAYCOCK Frederick John MB BS
1917-1952
Frederick John Laycock was born on 9th July 1917, in Yongala, SA. He was the son of Frederick Laycock and Mabel Christian Grace, nee Clode. Laycock was educated at St Peter’s College and studied medicine at the University of Adelaide. graduating in 1941.
Laycock initially joined the army on 8th August 1940, as a medical student, and after graduation was placed on the Reserve of Officers as a captain. He commenced full-time duty on 2nd January 1942 in 105 AMH, Adelaide. He initially gave his father as his next of kin whose address was the National Bank in North Adelaide This was later changed to his wife Jean, whom he married on 6th October 1942. She was at the time living in Seymour, Victoria, but moved to Pier Street, Glenelg before the end of the war. He was posted to 6th Lt FdAmb on 10th March 1942, and then detached for a short time to 109 AGH, on 11th May 1942, returning to his unit at the end of the month. He had completed a course on tropical diseases before volunteering for the 2/AIF on 12th August 1942 in Puckapunyal, Victoria. Laycock was attached to 2 Mobile Division AASC on 5th August 1942. He appears to have had a period of relative inactivity throughout 1943 possibly serving with CMF. However, he was allotted to 1 Aust Corps, QLD, on 23rd December 1944 and, on 22nd August 1945 he was appointed to 13th Advanced Workshop AEM, QLD. Laycock was allotted for duties with 121 AGH on 14th September 1945. On 19th November he was posted to Inter-Services Medical Wing South Australian LoC as MO for twenty eight days. On 11th March 1946, he was granted a period of leave for training before discharge. Laycock on 19th June 1946 was discharged and placed on the Reserve of Officers.
Frederick John Laycock died on 15th January 1952 and is interred at West Terrace Cemetery Adelaide South Australia; survived by his wife who died on 17th July 1976 and is interred at Centennial Park Pasadena South Australia.
