Edwin Ernest Delby BURGESS( 1922-?)
Edwin Burgess, like most young men in WW2 was initially drafted into the Militia / CMF for Homeland Defence duties. His early 'S' serial number confirms this; 'S' indicating he wa enlisted in SA and the absence of an 'X' means he was not identified for overseas service in the AIF ; at least initially. After Japan entered the war the draft reached down to 18 year olds so John would have been eligible for service from his 18th birthday. However the Government was struggling to cope with the sheer numbers involved and so intake was quite often deferred.
We have not been able to glean his initial enlistment date; that will require closer inspection of his service record when that becomes available on the DVA website.
After an initial period of service in the Militia, and like many of his colleagues, he decided to transfer to either the RAAF the 2nd AIF or in some cases the Navy. It would appearat that point in time he was based in NSW; specifically Parramatta in Western Sydney.
