Son of Isabella Cook Forbes, of 447 Alfred Street, North Sydney, and the late Joseph Harding Forbes. Born in Ipswich, Queensland.
"...Lieutenant Joseph William Forbes, 6th Battalion. An accountant from Melbourne, Vic prior to enlistment, Lt Forbes embarked with the 11th Reinforcements from Melbourne aboard HMAT Nestor on 11 October 1915. He was subsequently Mentioned in Despatches for "distinguished and gallant service and devotion to duty in the field". He was killed in action on 20 September 1917 at Ypres, Belgium, aged 26 and was buried in the Perth Cemetery (China Wall), Belgium. His brother Lt Muirton Warrand Forbes, 2nd Battalion, was also killed in action." - SOURCE (www.awm.gov.au)
Lieuteant Joseph William Forbes has been killed in action in Flanders. He was the third son of the late J.H. Forbes of Culloden and Ferintosh, Scotland, whose widow lives in North Sydney. He was educated at the Brisband Grammar School and the Church of England Grammar School, North Sydney, and was accountant in the Melbourne office of the Bank of Queensland Ltd. Lieut. Forbes was wounded at Pozieres, where he won his second star. Two brothers Captain A.D. Forbes and Corporal M.W. Forbes, are also at the front.
