An Officer's Memorial.
At Holy Trinity Church, East Melbourne, on Wednesday evening, at the evening service conducted by the vicar. Rev. B.W.White, a brass altar cross was consecrated by Rev. Canon Alfred Wheeler (Vicar at All Saints Newtown 1909-1937) in memory of the late Edward Handfield Anderson; second lieutenant, 57th Battalion, A.I.F., who was killed in action at Fleurbaix on 19th July, 1916. The last heard of Lieutenant Anderson was in a statement by Private C.J. Reid, 4571, of the same battalion, Who states : — 'Near Armentieres Lieutenant Anderson was wounded, and afterwards he went out to No Man's Land three times, and brought back wounded men. The third time he was again wounded, and he persisted in going out a fourth time, though the men  tried their best to persuade liim not to do so. However, he did go out and was killed by machine gun fire. He fell in No Man's Land, and was left there, as it was impossible to get  him. About a fortnight before this engagement, 'Gertie,' as his men called him, was kicked on the jaw by a horse, and had a bad face.' His brother, Captain W. H. Anderson, flight  commander, A.F.C., is now in France with his squadron. Lieutenant Anderson, who was an Old Melburnian and also an old choir boy of St. Paul's Cathedral, was eldest son of Mr. Edward Anderson, of Jolimont, and grandson of the late Mr. W. H. Handfield.
