Eldest of the three brothers (Gordon, Frank and Lloyd) who served in WWII, Private Gordon James Frisby (Service Nos:S32826/SX22001) initially enlisted in the ACMF on 21 September 1940, and was called up for Full Time Duty (FTD) with SA L of C Petrol Coy on 22 December 1941 - graded Driver Mechanic. Private Frisby transferred to the AIF on 3 July 1942 and served with 149 and 122 General Transport (AGT) Coys - Driver - and was posted to Darwin, Northern Territory from 7 November 1944 to 5 July 1945. Private Frisby was attached to 122 AGT at Discharge on 28 February 1946.
Gordon was born in Smithfield, South Australia in 1915, fourth of seven children of James Scott Frisby (b1885 in Smithfield, South Australia) and Florence (Flo) May Swann (b1887 in Gawler, South Australia). James (a Carrier) and Flo married in 1910 in Gawler, where they settled and raised their family. James was a Carrier and Chaff Merchant, and during WWI was awarded a contact for the 'cartage of forage for the Military Forces of the Commonwealth' (Trove; 1915). James and Flo lived in Smithfield and Gawler, where James was a Carrier/Carter.
Gordon started work as a Labourer in Gawler, and was a Lorry Driver in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army. In January 1944 in Adelaide he married Elizabeth Joyce Davis (nee Hay; b1921 in Hackney, South Australia), and they were divorced in November that year. Both remarried - Gordon in 1945 in Adelaide to Hazel Joan Dymmott (b1924 in Blyth, South Australia). Following his Discharge in 1946, Gordon and Hazel settled in Smithfield, where Gordon worked as a Carrier/Lorry Driver. Invalided in the late 1960s, Gordon died in 1976.
