HILL John Seymour Thew Tregarthen MB BS

1914-1991

John Seymour Thew Tregarthen Hill was born on 10th May 1914, in Summertown, SA. He was the son of the Reverend HC and Minnie CL Hill.  He was educated at Unley High School and studied medicine at the University of Adelaide, graduating MB BS in 1941. He undertook his resident year at the RAH in 1941.

Hill enlisted in the AAMC shortly after he completed his medical degree, on 2nd January 1942, naming his mother as his next of kin. He was immediately called up for full-time duty and posted, at the rank of captain, to 105 AMH. By the end of January 1942, he was sent to the Northern Territory and transferred as an RMO to 43rd Inf Bn in 7 MD, NT. He returned to SA in April 1943 and married Mary Darton, of 294 Glen Ferrie Road, Hawthorn Victoria, on 19th April 1943. He left for the QLD LoC area on 29th May 1943. His next of kin details was changed to his wife. While in QLD he completed some military courses and remained with 43rd Inf Bn allotted for duty with 2/4th FdAmb on 16th May 1944.  He was admitted to 2/2nd AGH with an injury to his right knee, on 19th April 1944; during this admission he was diagnosed with diabetes mellitus. He was medically reclassified and admitted to 105 AMH, in Adelaide, for treatment of his diabetes and on discharge allotted for regimental duties at 105 AMH from 2/4th FdAmb. His wife moved to SA and changed her address to Lockleys, SA.  Hill had several more admissions to 105 AMH and was given 90 days medical training days before his discharge on the 18th April 1946. 

Hill returned to the RAH following the war and was appointed, in 1948, as an honorary clinical assistant (medical) in the out-patients department. He was a member of the AMA and was living and practised as a general practitioner, in Mount Gambier, SA in the 1970s.  He is recorded as living in Casterton, or Strathdownie, Victoria, in 1980. John Seymour Thew Tregarthen Hill died on the 26th January 1991 in Glenunga, SA. He was recorded as a retired medical practitioner and farmer. Two of his sons were doctors, David a specialist paediatrician and Ian who led a distinguished career with the World Health Organisation.
