Charles Henry Symonds Hawke was born in Adelaide, South Australia on the 19th of May 1912. Before the war started Charles main occupation was an Electrician and his religion was Roman Catholic. He enlisted on the 1st of September 1942. Charles Army number was SX18802 and his rank was Corporal. He was 30 years old at enlistment and 5 foot and 11 inches tall. Charles had blue eyes, a fair complexion, and dark brown hair. He also had two scars on his body, one of the scars was on his chin and another scar on his left thigh. Charles also had a tattoo on his left arm.
Charles enlisted at Wayville on the 1st of September 1942. Posted to 2/4th field company, Royal Australian Engineers on 9th of July 1943. He then was embarked at Townsville on the 12th of August 1943. Disembarked at Port Moresby on the 14th of August 1943. He then returned to Australia on the 20th of May 1944. Embarked at Cairns on the 23rd of May 1945. Disembarked to Morotai on the 13th of June 1945. Charles was then promoted Acting Corporal on the 15th of June 1945. He was then embarked at Morotai for service in Borneo on the 20th of June 1945. The rank of Corporal was confirmed on the 25th of July 1945. After that he was then transferred to the 2/5th field company and then to the 11th works and park company on the 22 December 1945. He than arrived back in Australia approximately the 15th of January 1946. Charles was discharged on the 22nd of January 1946.
During the war Charles married Ethel Ruby Simons. After a few months of being married they had their first child Evan Barry Hawke in the year 1945 followed by Raelene Evelyn Hawke and Leon Hawke. Charles divorced his first wife Ethel Ruby Simons and remarried to Betty Pride with whom he had another child Lynette Hutch.
On the 10th of August 1975 Charles sadly died from a stroke at 63 years of age. His grave is in located in Elliston, South Australia.
