Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Max was born in Port Broughton 2nd May 1923 and moved to Arno Bay on the Eyre Peninsula in 1927. He attended the Boothby School. On leaving school Max worked as a farm labourer for his parents and other landowners of the district up until his enlistment into the Army in 1942.

On his discharge in 1946 Max returned to Arno Bay and purchased the family farm from his parents Richard and Rosina Stringer.

Max worked the farm up until his death on the 13th of February 1973.

Max was heavily involved in the local community.

Football

Unable to clarify when Max commenced playing senior football at Arno Bay, he is recorded as being a member of the 1938 Arno Bay Premiership team, he would have been 15 years of age, it would appear that he would have played up until his enlistment into the Army on 25th May 1942.

Max resumed his career at Arno Bay on his discharge from the Army 29th March 1946.

Arno Bay Football 1953 Team photograph includes Max in playing strip.

Max continued to play football for Arno Bay and the Association up until the mid-1950's when he received a serious arm injury while playing football and never played again. (son Grant has no idea what year, but does remember Max having a cast on his arm)

Two-time premiership player for Arno Bay in the Cleve & Districts Association.

Max continued to serve the Arno Bay Football Club for many years he was President (1959 - 1961 & 1964 - 1967), league delegate, leading the club through many successful seasons and premierships.

He was rewarded for his contribution to the Arno Bay Football Club by being awarded life membership of the club in 1971.

It would be fair to assume that the years away for service during the World War ll robbed Max of many years of playing football.
