Biography contributed by Evan Evans

From, Gary Mitchell, Sandgate Cemetery.

Served and suffered during The Great War, died tragically, now resting peacefully at Sandgate Cemetery.

81 years ago today, on the Tuesday afternoon of the 2nd January 1940, Private George William Perkins, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion (Reg No-2171), fruiterer and cleaner (BHP Steelworks, Newcastle, N.S.W.), from Maitland Road, Mayfield, New South Wales and Belmont?, N.S.W. and 65 Fern Street, Islington, N.S.W., father of three (Cyril, Marion and Reginald), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 53. METHODIST 3 (UNITING) G. 58.

Born at Northborough, Northamptonshire, England on the 19th January 1886 to William and Sarah Ann Perkins nee Coleson; husband of Georgina Maud Perkins nee Tuft (married 9.3.1910, Derbyshire, England, died 1933, also sleeping here), also Ellen (Nellie) Perkins nee Holmes (married July 1939, Lambton, N.S.W., died 1964, Newcastle Memorial Gardens), George enlisted March 1916 at Newcastle, N.S.W.

Admitted to hospital 20.1.1917 (pneumonia, bronchitis, serious), 7.2.1918 (pleuro-pneumonia), George returned home August 1918, and was discharged medically unfit (defective vision) on the 18th September 1918.

Mr Perkins’s name has been inscribed on the Belmont Methodist Church Honour Roll (unveiled on the 27th April 1930, currently in my possession, looking for a permanent home), Belmont Roll of Honour and the Mayfield Methodist Church Roll of Honour.

There is no headstone at Mr Perkins’s gravesite to tell us of George’s service and sacrifice during The Great War, so I will erect a cross soon to restore his honour and dignity.

A Plaque will also be placed courtesy of the Forgotten Diggers Headstone Project as, unfortunately, George would not qualify to be officially commemorated.
Many thanks to Shayne Cunningham for the family history and the photo of Mr Perkins, standing on right in uniform, with Thomas John Clark (seated, Reg No-2078, 1st Australian Pioneer Battalion, who married George's sister Hannah).

Lest We Forget.
