John enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force as John Johnson Francis. He served as a Trooper (Service No. 45A) with the 8th Australian Light Horse. He was discharged on 28 August 1915. He was the son of Ellen Johnstone. Died aged 26 years.

He is recent addition to the roll of Great War dead, he was accepted, after research,  for commemoration as Great War dead on 1st February 2017.
