Herbert Moss was the eldest son of Herbert Moss of Upton Park, London, England. He was married to Emily Ann Upton (nee Field). He was born in New Eltham, Kent England. He travelled to Australia on 6 May 1912, and when the war broke out, he was working on a farm belonging to Mrs. J Greenbank of Snake Valley, Victoria. He volunteered immediately and took part in the landing at Anzac on 25 April 1915. It was reported he was shot in the forehead during a charge on that day.
