Biography contributed by Gordon Fidler

Jean Margaret Goodes served for 6 years as an Army Nurse in the Australian Army during World War 2 in the Middle East and New Guinea, she held the rank of Captain at the time of her discharge in August 1946.. She enlisted on the 18th December 1940 at Woodside, South Australia, her service number was SX10709, her next of kin was listed as G. Hutchison. Australian National Archieves record B883-SX10709.
Jean was engaged to a Vivian Crouch and hung herself in the wash-house at his parents house, 20 James Street, Prospect, Adelaide on the 4 Jan 1947. She had received a letter dated 22nd Dec 1946 from Vivian on which she had written "I am not worthy - shall destroy myself & the evil that is in me." Vivian's parents (Mr & Mrs Kenneth Crouch) were on a fortnights holiday at Caltowie. Vivian was at the time building at house for Jean & himself in Kindenup, Western Australia and due to building difficulties had to delay the date of their marriage. This delay had caused Jean a great deal of stress and is believed to be the reason for her taking her own life. Her body was found by the next door neighbour, Ethel Lillian Duval, the police were called and P.C.C. Desmond Ambrose King O'Malley attended. The doctor also attending was Gordon Roy West.
The Post Mortem report notes that there was a small stab wound on the left side of her neck which may have been a previous attempt at suicide.
Cause of Death: Anoxya of brain due to hanging.
No evidence of pregnancy.
Internal Organs: Normal.
