Biography contributed by Thomas More College

Edley Thomas Palmer was born on the 7th of July 1920. He grew up in Koolunga, South Australia, which was a small rural area known for its agriculture and close-knit community. Edley lived with his parents Thomas Palmer and Mary Palmer.

Edley decided to enlist in the army on the 11th of December 1940, at Wayville, South Australia. He was then assigned to the 2nd/10th Australian Infantry Battalion where he demonstrated his capabilities and resilience and was quickly promoted to Corporal.

Throughout his service, Edley had embarked on many operations across the Theatres of War. One of his most significant events was the Battle of Balikpapan taking place in Borneo, where he was tragically killed in action during the 1st of July 1945, at the age of 24. His sacrifice for the country was mourned by fellow soldiers and his family back home in Koolunga.

Currently, Edley’s name is honoured in several memorials, including the Adelaide WW2 Wall of Remembrance and the Koolunga War Memorial. His name can also be located on Panel 34 at the Commemorative Area of the Australian War Memorial Roll of Honour. Although his life ended at a young age, his bravery and service will be remembered by future generations, as well as his kindness and dedication towards protecting others.
