Married EVERETT
Heroine of a real war-time romance is Sister Jean Raftery, of Dulwich, who met her husband while serving as an A.I.F. nurse abroad. As Sister Burnside, she was married to Capt. John Raftery, also a South Australian, in the hospital chapel just before she returned home with invalid soldiers. After the wedding, at which both were in uniform, they had a short honeymoon in Egypt. Four other nurses at the hospital had been married, and several had become engaged to soldiers there. Sister Raftery trained at the Adelaide Children's Hospital, and left for overseas 12 months ago. She was stationed in large military hospital with 1,600 beds. Hospital conditions were splendid, she said, and the boys very happy and contented. Parcels from Red Cross and the F.F.C.F. were arriving in good condition Nearly all food was Australia-made. Local butter was made without salt, and was unpalatable to Australian tastes. So a good supply of "the real stuff" was welcomed by both patients and nurses.
Sister Raftery intends to begin a nursing job here soon to keep herself busy until her soldier-husband can join her. http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article131975907 (nla.gov.au)
