Found guilty at Codford, 19 June 1917, of conduct to the prejudice of good order and military discipline in that he was found in the private grounds attached to the Sisters' quarters of No 3 New Zealand Hospital, 8.30 pm, 18 June 1917: awarded 10 days' Field Punishment No 2.
Proceeded to France through Southampton, 16 July 1917; marched into 4th Australian Divisional Base Depot, Havre, 17 July 1917.
Found guilty at Havre, 23 July 1917, of (1) breaking into camp, 2.15 pm, 20 July 1917, and (2) being out of bounds, 20 July 1917: awarded a fine of 3 days' pay; moved into the field, 2 August 1917; taken on strength of 46th Bn, 4 August 1917.
Admitted to New Zealand Field Ambulance, 29 September 1917,and transferred to 62nd Casualty Clearing Station (shell shock); discharged to duty, 8 October 1917; re-joined unit in the field, 9 October 1917; detached to 12th Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery, 1 December 1917; proceeded on leave to the United Kingdom, 5 January 1918.
Found guilty in London, 14 February 1918, of being absent without leave, 7.30 am, 20 January, to 12.00 pm, 13 February 1918: awarded a fine of 28 days' pay; forfeited total of 53 days' pay; re-joined 46th Battalion from leave, 18 February 1918; re-attached to Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery, 26 February 1918.
Admitted to 13th Australian Field Ambulance, 4 April 1918, and transferred to 4th Australian Field Ambulance (influenza); to Casualty Clearing Station, 7 April 1918; to 24th General Hospital, Etaples, 8 April 1918 (put under observation). Proceeded to England for further treatment, 13 April 1918; admitted to Reading War Hospital, 16 April 1918; transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 2 May 1918; discharged on furlough, 6 May 1918. Declared an illegal absentee by Court of Inquiry, London, 27 June 1918.
Discharged in consequence of desertion, 1 April 1920.

Callan (Irish: Callainn) is a market town in County Kilkenny in Ireland. Situated 16 km (10 mi) south of Kilkenny on the N76 road to Clonmel, it is near the border between County Tipperary. It is the second largest town in the county.
He is honoured on the Kilkenny, MacDonagh Station World War I War Memorial at MacDonagh Station, Station Road, Kilkenny, Co. Kilkenny.
