Prior to arriving in Australia William had served in the Canadian Navy for three years, Royal Navy for seven years. Having arrived in Australia he served in the Australian Navy for ten months.

Commenced return to Australia on 24 January 1919 aboard HT Delta disembarking on 25 March 1919
