Gilbert Thomas Hilder was born on 15 July, 1896 in Cradock, South Australia and was the son of Thomas and Amelia Hilder. Gilbert had seven other siblings, five older than him and two younger than him. There was Clifford Allen Hilder, Lilly Maud Hilder, Millicent Amelia Hilder, Albert Edward Hilder, Sydney Roy Hilder, Gilbert Thomas Hilder, Sylvia Ethel Hilder, and John Herbert Hilder.

When Gilbert was old enough he attended Hawker Area School.

After he finished school, he worked as a farm laborer for a few years until he was allowed to go to war when he was nineteen.

Gilbert signed up for the war at the same time as his older brother, Sydney. They enlisted in Orroroo, South Australia.

He then went to Sydney and embarked on 21 September, 1916 on the ‘Commonwealth’. He then disembarked at Plymouth in England on 14 November, 1916.

He marched to his unit the fifth Pioneer Battalion in the fifth division. He next proceeded overseas to France on the 5 April, 1917 and then fought in the Battle of Etaples, France. The Germans using mustard gas, which caused blistering in the lungs and throat, gassed him in a trench. He was then admitted to hospital on 9 May, 1918. While he was in hospital his mother, Amelia Hilder sent a telegraph to the hospital making sure he was not wounded badly. They sent back and they replied saying that he was fine.  He then was discharged back to duty on 21 May 1918.

He returned to Australia on the 3 May 1919.

In 1924, Gilbert married Veronica Mary Dee, they did not have any children. Gilbert lived until 1969 and died after forty-five years of marriage.
