Private Francis Joseph Hinkley (Service No:SX8858) enlisted in the Army on 2 July 1940 and served in the Northern Territory before embarking for Singapore on 11 February 1941 with 2 Reserve Motor Coy. Private Hinkley was reported missing on 16 February 1942 and confirmed as a PoW of the Japanese in 1943. He died of diesease in Burma on 18 May 1943. Uncle John Hinkley (Service No:5108) served in the AF in WWI and Uncle Thomas Hinkley (Service No:24/465) served with the New Zealand Rifle Brigade.
Born in 1910 in Geraldton Western Australia, Frank was the only child of George Hinkley (b1876 in Chetwynd, Victoria) and Eliza Lavina Truran (b1875 in Cornwall, England). George arrived in Albany WA from Victoria in 1900 and Eliza immigrated to Fremantle WA in 1880. George (a Railway Repairer) and Eliza married in 1910 in Perth WA and lived in Greenough and Mullewa where George was a Railway Repairer and Labourer, and a Farmer in 1914 at Eradu nr Geraldton, before settling in Adleaide, South Australia.
Frank worked as a Chauffeur in Adelaide, South Australia before enlisting in the Army in 1940.
