Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

One of five siblings and numerous cousins to serve in WWII, Private Harold Leslie Brown (Service No:SX8025) enlisted in the AIF on 5 July 1940 - graded Mechanic, re graded Fitter - and was attached to 2/48 Infantry Battalion on 7 November 1940 when he embarked with his Unit from Adelaide bound for the Middle East on board HMT Stratheden. Private Brown returned from the Middle East on 3 September 1942 on board V66 Troja, and was attached to 2/48 Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 5 February 1943.

Les was born in New Town in Kadina, South Australia in 1903, eldest of six children of Harold Henry Sidney Brown (b1882 at South Hummocks, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia) and Mary Anne Kempster (b1884 in Magill, South Australia). Harold (a Labourer in Kadina) and Mary married in 1903 in New Town, where they lived before settling in Adelaide by 1912. Harold worked as a Labourer, and for the Tramways as a Conductor and Motor Man.

Les worked as a Motor Mechanic in Adelaide, where, in 1940, he married his first wife Florence (Florrie) Mabel Bradman (nee Waldman; b1894 in Surrey England) - Florrie was a Leather Machinist when she immigrated in 1912, arriving in Adelaide on board the Ballarat. Les and Florrie settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family and Les worked as a Mechanic. Following Florrie's death in 1957, Les remarried to Beatrice Lily Tovey (nee Schulz; b1906 in Wilmington, South Australia). Beatrice died in 1967 and Les in 1983.
