Add my storyBiography
Albert (Bert) William SQUIRE also known to his Army mates as "Tiny" because of his height (over 6ft tall). He was born and raised in Gawler, South Australia. He was a typical Aussie and loved a beer and mixing with Family and Friends and worked very hard. In 1940 at the age of 21 the Government of the time called for volunteers to join up in the Defence Forces. Like many of his mates who joined up he felt it was his duty to fight for his Country alongside them. On 05/07/1940 he enlisted in the Army. He did his training at Woodside, SA and on 07/11/1940 he embarked on the HMT Stratheden for overseas to the Middle east where he joined up with the 2/48th Battalion and completed a cook's course at the M E Cookery School Course 56.
He was discharged on 10/01/1945 after serving 1651 days in the Army. He would rarely ever talk about the War. He attended the Marches in Adelaide on Anzac Day until unable to due to his health. He passed away at the age of 73 on 25/5/1992.
