One of four brothers (Richard, Lenard, Ronald and Albert) who served in WWII, Private Lenard William Thomas Bayly (Service No:SX7709) enlisted in the AIF on 3 July 1940 and Marched Out to 2 ITD and then 2/48 Infantry Battalion - graded Driver. In January 1941 Private L Bayly served in Alice Springs NT with 9 Division Ammunition Sub Park, and later that year joined his older brother Richard (Service No:SX1042) in 8th Division Ammunition Sub Park, embarking from Sydney for Singapore on 23 October 1941 on board HMAT Zealandia. Private L Bayly was Reported Missing (as was his older brother) on 9 April 1942, and both brothers were confirmed as PoWs held by the Japanese on 21 October 1943. Recovered from the Japanese on 12 September 1945, Private L Bayly emplaned from Singapore for Sydney on 18 September 1945, and was attached to 8 Division Ammunition Sub Park at Discharge on 22 November 1945.

Len was born in Nailsworth, South Australia in 1913, second of four childrn (sons) of William Robert Bayly (b1887 at Yelta, South Australia) and Myrtle Edith Briggs (b1882 in Inkerman, South Australia). William (a Teacher in Adelaide) and Myrtle married in Prospect in 1910, and in 1914 moved to Broken Hill, New South Wales - William was a Contractor and Salvage Salesman (Wiehart & Bayly). Returning to South Australia, William and Myrtle settled at Two Wells via Wakefield, where William worked as a Mason. All four of their sons served in WWII - the eldest two (Richard and Lenard) were PoWs in Malaya.

Len worked as a Labourer in Nailsworth, and in 1935 in Minlaton married his first wiife, Florence Maude Cook (b1917 in Minlaten, South Australia). In 1940 when he enlisted in the Army, Len was working as a Driver in Nailsworth, and following his Discharge, returned to Minlaten. Florence died in 1948, and Len remarried in 1951 in Minlaten to Alice Margaret Cook (b1908 in Minlaten, South Australia). Len and Alice lived in Minlaten before settling in Adelaide, where Len worked as a Driver and Labourer. Len died in 1989 and Alice died in 1993.
