Private Alfred Woolard Gooch (Service No:SX7518) enlisted in the AIF on 2 July 1940 with 2/48th Infantry Battalion - graded Technical Storeman. Private Gooch was attached to 2/48th Battalion on 29 October 1940 when he embarked with his Unit from Adelaide for the Middle East on board HMT Stratheden. Private Gooch embarked with HQ Guard Battalion from the Middle East for Greece on 16 March 1941, and returned to Sydney on 27 May 1941 on board the Queen Mary. Private Gooch was attached to HQ Guard Battalion at Discharge on 5 September 1941.
Fourth of five children, Alf was born in 1897 in Adelaide, South Australia to Arthur Crack Gooch (b1850 in Suffolk, England) and Eleanor (Nellie) Thompson (b1857 in Mt Barker, South Australia). Arthur immigrated with his parents and siblings in 1953, arriving in Port Adelaide on board the William Stewart. Arthur and Nellie married in 1887 in Adelaide, where they settled and raised their family - Arthur and Nellie were Storekeeepers.
In 1924 in Plympton in Adelaide, Alf married Amy Edith Whitrod (b1902 in Thebarton, Adelaide, South Australia). Alf and Amy settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family and Alf was a Motor Driver in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army. Amy died in 1968 and Alf died in 1971.
