Son of Clinton George DOWDELL of McLaren Flat.  Educated at McLaren Flat Public School, he played football for the Hillside Team.  Enlisting in June 1940 he left for overseas in April 1941.  After serving in the Syrian campaign, he returned to Australian on 19th March 1942.
