17 Jun 1940: | Discharged Military Service: SX5594 Craftsman Joseph Alfred Todd enlisted in the Australian Infantry Forces (AIF) on the 17th June 1940 in Adelaide, South Australia. He was 23 years and eight months old on enlistment and occupation was Farm Hand. Joe was single but married Agnes Rose Parkyn on the 24th August 1940, at Murray Bridge South Australia. Their home address then was c/- L.F. Cooper at Two Wells, South Australia. His religion on enlistment was Methodist. On the 21st November 1940 Joe proceeded on Pre-Embarkation leave, then on the 20th December embarked on HMAT Mauritania at Port Melbourne and headed out, at Colombo they transhipped onto HMT "Neavalsa", and on the 8th February 1941 disembarked in the Middle East. Joe was evacuated to 62 British General Hospital (BGH) with a GSW/Grenade accident on the 6th April 1941. The wound was in the left leg and left knee. He was discharged from hospital on the 28th August and went back to hospital with another injury to the right knee and then discharged on the 6th September 1941. On the 9th September he rejoined his unit and on the 23rd February 1942 was transferred to HQ 9 Australia Division and taken on strength from the 2/43 Battalion on the 4th April 1942. He was promoted to Acting Corporal; 11 days later reverted to private at his request. On the 7th February 1943 Joe embarked from The Middle East and disembarked at Melbourne on the 25th March 1943. On the 28th April 1943 embarked Sydney per SS Ormiston and disembarked Cairns on the 28th April, rejoined his unit from leave from SS Ormiston. On the 11th June 1943 Joe transferred to Signals 6 Australian Division and was taken on strength from HQ 9 Australia Division. On the 24th June He attended a mobile cooking school and was graded as a group Two Cook, He then rejoined his unit. On the 28th July 43 transferred to Australian Army Catering Corps (AACC) and was taken on strength of Sigs 6 Aust Division. From the 3rd Mar to 5th April 1944 Joe was Hospitalised with dermatitis. On the 15th July 1944 Joe was transferred to 2/42 Australia LAD (Light Armoured Detachment?)_from 6 Aust Div Sigs, on the 6th December 1944 embarked Townsville per SS Bontikoe disembarking at Aitape. Joe's daughter Rose-Marie Edith was born on the 17th November 1944. He disembarked at Brisbane from Wewak per SS Bontikoe. Joe's operational service dates are: 29/12/1940 - 25/2/1943 Middle East 19/11/1944 - 28/9/1945 New Guinea. He was in Tobruk during the siege and was one of many classified as a "Rat of Tobruk".
