Born in Acton, Middlesex, England, he was living in Surrey in 1939 with his wife. He enlisted in June 1940 in Adelaide, South Australia. Allotted to the 2/27th Battalion, he was assigned the 2/6th Field Ambulance shortly before embarkation. Served in the Middle East, then onto New Guinea for 6 months. Later served in the 25/33 Garrison Battalion from April 1943 to August 1944 before he was discharged in April 1945.
