Bruce left Melbourne on board A 15 Port Sydney on 7 September 1916 and disembarked at Plymouth, England on 29 October. On 9 January 1917 he went to France and transferred to the 2nd Division Artillery, 8th Reinforcement, serving as a Gunner with the 105 Howitzer Battery, on 17 January. Bruce was affected by being in close proximity to a shell explosion on 22 October and as a result spent the period 28 October to 27 December in hospital in Belgium. He was then hospitalised in France and later, England on 5 January 1918 after being diagnosed having severe neurasthenia. Bruce left England on the Suevic on 21 April and returned to Australia on 7 June.
During World War Two Bruce Cornelius re-enlisted on 14 June 1940 and served at Bathurst, Palestine, Port Moresby and Townsville. During this period of service he was treated for malaria, anxiety, influenza, paroxysm and a heart condition. Consequently Bruce was medically reclassified on 26 March 1945 and returned to Australia. He had risen to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel throughout his service.
Lieutenant Colonel Bruce Cornelius died on 13 June 1984.
