Private Walter Swinton (Service No:2463) served with 14th Infantry Battalion for twelve months before enlisting in the AIF on 5 August 1915, and was attached to 30th Infantry Battalion on 11 March 1916 when he embarked with his Unit from Sydney for the Middle East on board HMAT A67 Orsova. On 21 June 1916 Private Swinton embarked from Alexandria for Marseilles, and served on the Western front with 30th and 61st Infantry Battalions. Hospitalised in September 1916 with Malaria, Private Swinton then embarked from England on 22 May 1919 for Melbourne on board the Durham, and was attached to 30th Infantry Battalion at Discharge on 13 September 1919. In WWII Corporal Swinton (Service No:N270163) served in the ACMF with 8 and 9 Australian Lines of Communication Provost Coys from 7 May 1941 to 16 August 1945.

Dick (aka Wattie) was born in Greta, New South Wales in 1896, youngest of eight children of George Swinton (b1837 in Dundee, Scotland) and his second wife Mary (Jane) Jane Roach (b1855 in Ballarat, Victoria). George was a Widower with three young children when he and Jane married in 1881 in Greta, where they settled and raised their family and George was a Coal Miner.

Dick was working as a Coal Miner (Wheeler) in Greta in 1915 when he enlisted in the Army. Following his Discharge, in 1921 he married Doris Mary Boyle (b1900 at Anvil Creek via Greta, New South Wales). Dick and Doris settled in Greta, where they raised their family and Dick worked as a Coal Miner at the New Greta and the Leconsfield Collieries. Dick died in 1975 and Doris in 2005.
