Younger of two brothers (Lawrence and Robert) who served in WWII, Private Robert Henry Pettet (Service No:SX2140) enlisted in the AIF on 26 March 1940, and was attached to 2/10 Infantry Battalion on 5 November 1940 when he embarked with his Unit from Adelaide for Palestine on board HMT Stratheden. On 12 February 1941, Private Pettet marched out to 18th Infantry Training Battalion, and on 28 March 1942 embarked from Suez for Adelaide on board SS Andes. On 17 March 1944 in Adelaide, Private Pettet marched out to 118 Australian General Transport Coy, and was attached to 108 Convalescent Depot at Discharge on 8 December 1944.
Bob was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1917, youngest of two children of Helena (Nellie) Bremner (b1897 in Melbourne, Victoria). Nellie was a Factory Worker in 1921 when she married William Pettet (b1882 in Melbourne, Victoria). William (divorced with four children) had served in WWI (Private; Service No:2281), and worked as a Seaman, Horse Driver and Labourer. Nellie and William settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family - William adopted Laurie and Bob - and William worked as a Seaman and Builders Labourer until his death in 1935.
Bob was working in Adleaide as a Steward when he enlisted in the Army in 1940. Following his Discharge, Bob joined the Public Service, and in 1944 in Strathalbyn married Laurel Hilda Verner (b1915 in Strathalbyn, South Australia) - Laurel was working in Adelaide as a Telephonist. Bob and Laurel settled in Adelaide, where they raised their family and Bob was a Public Servant (Clerk, Department of Veterans' Affairs) until retirement. Bob served as President of the RSL & AILA Marion Sub Branch (1954). Bob died in 2002 and Laurel died in 2009.
