Served during The Great War, died tragically, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

88 years ago today, on the Wednesday afternoon of the 8th May 1935, Private Edward William Hunt, referred to as Ned, 30th Battalion (Reg No-437), blacksmith’s striker from 66 Mitchell Street, Merewether, New South Wales, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 43. ANGLICAN 1-64. 33. Not married.

Born at West Maitland, New South Wales on the 6th January 1892 to William and Elizabeth Hunt, Ned enlisted on the 18th July 1915 at Liverpool, N.S.W.

Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A72 Beltana on the 9th November 1915.
Admitted to hospital 3.2.1916 (mumps, mild), 30.12.1916 (trench feet, severe).

Ned returned home on the 25th May 1919, being discharged on the 18th July 1919.

Mr. Hunt’s name has been inscribed on the Junction Soldiers' Monument.

The tragic circumstances of Ned’s death were reported. Body found in harbour  - death from drowning  - coroner's report, open verdict.

I have placed poppies at Ned’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
