Thomas Alan Colbey was the third child and second son of Clara Isabella and Harold Cuthbert Colbey. His father died when Tom was 5. His mother Clara married Arthur Hampton in 1929 and the family moved to Biggs Flat, South Australia. Tom was the second son to enlist and he served in the motor transport section in the Middle East, Milne Bay, Port Moresby and Borneo.
Tom married (Edith) Joan Gilbert, a returned Lance Corporal from the Army Military Forces, on 27 April, 1946. They had two children.
