Sgt. John Mitchell 2/10th AIF of 5 Davenport Terrace, Wayville aged 24. Son of Mrs M and the late Mr D Mitchell. Educated at Port Pirie West Public and High Schools. Played baseball and cricket. Was a first class swimmer, having won several cups and trophies, was sussessful in 1931 in winning the Junior Championship. Joined the AIF in October 1939 and left for England in April 1940. After 9 months there was sent to the Middle East where he spent 8 months in Tobruk then through the Syrian campaign and returned to Australia in March 1942. Transferred to a Northern area and then to New Guinea, where he was killled in action against the Japanese at Buna on December 29 1942.
