Son of William John and Mabel Gertrude Hardwick of 21 Baliol Street, College Park, SA. Educated at Tailem Bend, Keith played cricket for the Electric Light Cricket Club. In civilian life he worked as a casual labourer and also at Woodroofe's Factory. Enlisted in October 1939 and trained at Woodside and Ingleburn. He left Australia in May 1940 for England and after several months went to the Middle East and saw service in Tobruk and Palestine and Syria.
