The final resting place for; - 3852 & V17273 Warrant Officer Class 2 Francis Lawrence Herman of Glenelg, South Australia & St. Kilda, Victoria had been employed as a Well borer when he enlisted for War Service on the 13th of January 1917.

Francis was allocated to reinforcements for the 5th Pioneers 1st AIF and was embarked for England and further training on the 30th of October. Having arrived safely in England, Francis was posted to the Pioneer Training School at Sutton Veny, prior to being embarked for France where he disembarked on the 20th of March 1918.

Officially taken on strength with his Unit in the trenches on the 10th of May, Francis would be wounded in action due to gas poisoning within weeks of his joining his Unit on the 20th of May and was returned to England for hospitalization and convalescence.

Francis would not be deemed fit enough for his return to France until the 20th of November, and with the War now over, he remained in France where he was detached for duty with the Australian Corps Working Party, until he was listed to be returned to Australia via England for repatriation, departing for his return home on the 23rd of July 1919.

Having returned to Australia, Francis received his official discharge from the 1st AIF for his re-entry into civilian life on the 6th of November 1919.

With the outbreak of a Second World War, Francis again presented himself for service with the Australian Military Forces on the 9th of July 1941.

Initially posted to 3rd Military District Records, Francis would be transferred to the Australian Instructional Corps on the 12th of November. Francis would remain with this Unit, until he was again transferred, when he was taken on strength with the 5th Docks Operating Company on the 10th of June 1942.

Whilst serving with this Unit, Francis’s premature death at the age of 48 occurred due to illness.

Following his passing, “Great War’ veteran, Warrant Officer Class 2 Francis Hermen, who had died whilst serving Australia during a Second World War, was formally laid to rest within Springvale War Cemetery, Victoria.
