Clerke Colquhoun BURTON was born in Albury, NSW on 6th November, 1883

His parents were Francis Charles BURTON & Mary Mackechnie COLQUHOUN who married in The Manse, Elsternwick, Victoria on 6th January, 1883

He died of pneumonia in Hendon, England on 14th December, 1918 and is buried in the Salisbury (London Rd) Cemetery

Clerke Colquhoun Burton was born at Albury, New South Wales on 6th November, 1883 (listed on his father’s headstone as 7th November, 1883) to parents Francis Charles and Mary M. Burton.

Clerke Colquhoun Burton was the “son of Capt F. C. Burton who commanded the Glasgow Shipping Coys Ship “Loch Katrine” which traded between England & Australia in 1869. Capt. C. C. Burton was for 2 years Secty of Melbourne Horticultural Society” according to information supplied by his father for the Roll of Honour.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 23rd April, 1915 as a 31 year old, single, Fire Loss Adjustor. He stated on his Attestation Papers that he had served with School Cadets.

On 20th May, 1915 Clerke Colquhoun Burton applied for a Commission in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.). He stated he had attended College Cadets & 4th Officers Training School.

Second Lieutenant Clarke Colquhoun Burton (name as per Embarkation Roll) embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Wandilla (A62) on 17th June, 1915 with the 7th Infantry Battalion, 6th Reinforcements & arrived at Suez on 18th July, 1915.

He had been promoted to Lieutenant on 1st June, 1915 while posted with 7th Battalion.

On 26th August, 1915 Lieutenant Burton proceeded to join M.E.F. (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force) from Alexandria. He joined his Battalion at Gallipoli Peninsula on 3rd September, 1915.

Lieutenant Burton was transferred from 7th Battalion on 14th October, 1915 to 9th Battalion “B” Company at Gallipoli Peninsula.

He rejoined Reinforcement Camp from Shrapnel Gully, Gallipoli Peninsula on 30th October, 1915.

On 10th November, 1915 Lieutenant Burton was sent to Hospital at Reinforcement Camp from Shrapnel Gully, Gallipoli Peninsula. He was admitted to 3rd Field Ambulance on 10th November, 1915 with Enteric then transferred & admitted to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station at Anzac, Gallipoli Peninsula on 10th November, 1915. Lieutenant Burton was transferred & admitted to Hospital Ship Neuralia from Anzac on 10th November, 1915 with Enteritis. He disembarked at Alexandria on 16th November, 1915 & transferred to train for Cairo. Lieutenant Burton was admitted to 1st Australian General Hospital at Cairo on 18th November, 1915. (as per Page 1 the Casualty Form – Active Service  (14/76 in Service Record file), however, Page 2 of the Casualty Form – Active Service  (15/76 in Service Record file), recorded he was admitted on 13th November, 1915. This entry recorded “Probably be discharged in 3 weeks.”)

Lieutenant Burton was transferred from 1st Australian General Hospital to Convalescent Camp at Helouan on 11th December, 1915. He was discharged to his Unit on 6th January, 1916.

On 8th February, 1916 Lieutenant Burton was admitted to 2nd Australian General Hospital at Cairo with Dysentery. He was discharged to Overseas Base on 16th February, 1916.

He was transferred to A.I.F. Canteens from 13th March, 1916 – A.I.F. Orders List 4.

Lieutenant Clerke Colquhoun Burton was to be Honorary Lieutenant, A.I.F. Headquarters from 27th March, 1916 – A.I.F. Order.

He embarked from Alexandria for overseas on 30th March, 1916 on Huntsgreen.

From 11th June, 1916 to 30th August, 1918 Honorary Lieutenant Burton was attached for duty with Inspection Branch, A.I.F. Canteens, Tidworth, Wiltshire, England.

Honorary Lieutenant Burton was to be Honorary Captain from 11th January, 1918 – A.I.F. List 283.

On 30th August, 1918 Honorary Captain Burton proceeded overseas to France. He was marched in to A.M.L.O. at Boulogne, France on 30th August, 1918 & marched out to his Unit the same day.

He was taken on strength of Australian Corps Headquarters, France from A.I.F. Headquarters (London) from 2nd September, 1918.

Honorary Captain Burton was detached for duty from Tidworth on 24th September, 1918 & marched out to France – A.I.F. Canteens.

On 14th October, 1918 Honorary Captain Burton was transferred to A.I.F. Headquarters, London from Australian Corps Headquarters, France.

He was attached for duty ex France (Canteens) on 19th October, 1918. Honorary Captain Burton was attached for duty in London ex France on 26th October, 1918. He was transferred to Transport Section ex Canteens on 30th October, 1918.

Honorary Captain Clerke Colquhoun Burton was transferred to General List from A.I.F. Canteens on 1st November, 1918 & granted the Temporary rank of Captain whilst employed with Transport Section.

From 2nd December, 1918 Temporary Captain Burton was attached to Repatriation & Demobilisation at London for duty.

 

Captain Clerke Colquhoun Burton died on 14th December, 1918 at “Crosby” Brampton Grove, Hendon, London, England from Influenza & Septic Pneumonia. (Note: Some forms in the Service Record file show the date of death as 13th December, 1918).

The Death Certificate recorded that date of death as 14th December, 1918 & that Louis E. Aulognier, Occupier, “Crosby”, Brampton Grove, Hendon was present at the death. Clerke Colquohoun Burton (spelling as listed on Death Certificate) was listed as Captain, A.I.F. Headquarter Staff, London (Fire Loss Assessor).

He was buried in London Road Cemetery, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England – Plot number K. 88 and has a Private Headstone.

 

Captain Clerke Colquhoun Burton is listed on the Australian War Memorial website under Honours and Awards (Recommendation) – by Commanding Officer George Wall dated 28th December, 1918: “Special ability displayed in and untiring devotion to duty in organizing canteens and supervising the supply of foodstuffs.” The recommendation form also listed that  Captain Burton had served overseas  & in Theatres of War for three years & eight months with Home Service in Egypt for 1 month; France for 3 months & England for 1 year & 5 months.
