Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Mrs. Dorothy A. Warren, of 75 Oxley road, Hawthorn, Vic., has been officially notified that her husband, Warrant-Officer Alfred M. Warren, was killed in action in July, near Singapore. He was previously  reported missing on February 22, 1945. He enlisted in January, 1941, in the armoured division, and served with it until June, 1944, when he volunteered for a Commando, miscellaneous, unit, which  trained on Garden Island, W.A., and was attached to the navy. He was rejected at first, on account of a slight physical disability, but finally succeeded in passing the test. In August he wrote that his  unit was leaving on intensive manoeuvres of about three months' duration, but that, all being well, he would be back in Australia in December, and meanwhile there would be no mail communication  either way. Until he was posted missing, nothing had been heard of or from him. When Singapore was relieved at the end of hos tilities, in answer to enquiries at headquarters, "Z" special unit reported  that "his party landed in the Singapore area about October, 1944, and could be prisoners of war." Search parties operated, and their report was, "Killed in action, July."

He was the eldest son of Mr and Mrs W. R. Warren, "Napperby," Tantanoola. Born at Port Pirie on January 25th, 1913, he was educated first at Henley Beach kindergarten, during, which time his father  was serving, with the A.I.F. artillery in France in the first great war. In 1920 his father took up land at Tantanoola, where Alf attended the Benara Flat and Tantanoola schools. In 1925 he gained a government exhibition, also the Vansittart scholarship at St. Peter's College. After leaving school he stayed on the land for a short time but, being mechanically minded, joined the firm of Daniel Scott,  Pty, Ltd., King street, Melbourne, before they expanded and moved to Fisherman's Bend. He was with them when he enlisted.
