William Russell Barton KIRKWOOD was born in Concord NSW in 1892

His parents were David Simpson Roberts KIRKWOOD & Jane (Jennie) McCullock BARTON who married in Sydney in 1879

He enlisted in Liverpool, NSW on 2nd March, 1915 & embarked as a Sergeant with the 19th Infantry Battalion on 25th June, 1915 from Sydney on the HMAT Ceramic

He was wounded in Gallipoli on 24th August, 1915 & again in France on 29th September, 1916

He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant on 19th August, 1916 and as Lieutenant on 1st January, 1917

William was Killed in Action in France on 3rd May, 1917 - no known grave

His name is memorialised on the Australian War Memorial & the Villers Bretonneux Memorial
