TOBRUK HERO KILLED -The Argus 25th July 1942

Advice has been received by Mr and Mrs Spencer Hayman, of the Bank of Australasia, Bendigo that Capt Hayman,MC, their son, VX14987, Capt Peter Spencer Hayman, MC, was killed in action on July 11 during the present fighting on the El Alamein front, In Egypt. Capt Hayman, who was aged 25, was one of the heroes of Tobruk, and won the Military Cross for most distlngulshed gallantry in a succession of engagements outside the perlmeter there on the night of July 1941. He was twice evacuated with wounds, but returned to his battalion on the Western Desert. He also served with distinction in the Syrian Campaign. Capt Hayman was engaged to be married to Loris, daughter of Mr and Mrs Keith Edgar,Briggs St, Caulfield.

VICTORIAN (MC) WINNER- The Argus 16th Oct. 1941

Lieut Peter Spencer Hayman, who has been awarded the MC for the leadership and gallantry displayed by him at Tobruk in July, is the second son of Mr and Mrs Hayman, of the Bank of Australasia, Bendigo He was educated at Warragul HS and Trinity GS and before enlisting was a member of the staff of the Bank of Australasia . He is engaged to Miss Lois Edgar, or Caulfield

Lieut Hayman was leader of a fighting patrol, and, although wounded by a grenade, led his men into an enemy stronghold until resistance from adjolnlng posts compelled him to break off the engagement. He successfully brought his party back with very few casual ties


The Argus 15th Oct. 1942

LT PETER SPENCER HAYMAN at Tobruk in July was leader of a fighting patrol of 2 Officers and 16 other ranks . Although palnfully wounded by a grenade he led his men through an enemy stronghold until resistance from adjoining posts compelled him to break off the fight. He successfully brought his party back to their own lines- a distance of nearly 5 miles with very few casualties His determined and forceful leadership and splendid courage and example were the main reasons for the success of the raid
