Sergeant Charles John Jordan (Service No:VX6010) initially served in the Militia as a Private (Service No:294556) with 6th Battalion from 20 January 1931 to 28 February 1933. He enlisted in the AIF as a Corporal on 20 October 1939 and was a Sergeant attached to 2/28 Infantry Battalion when he was WiA in Libya, and died of his wounds (abdominal) on 22 January 1941. Wife Pat served in the WRANS.
Charles was born in Broken Hill, NSW in 1912, third of six children of George Thomas Jordan (b1882 in Adelaide, South Australia) and Ellen Maude Mary Herbert (b1885 in Maude, NSW). George (a Hairdresser) and Ellen married in Broken Hill in 1909, and lived there and in Otago, New Zealand before settling in Melbourne, Victoria by 1921. George worked as a Hairdresser.
Charles worked as a Store Labourer in Melbourne and was keen sportsman, playing footbal and cricket with local teams. 'Sergeant Jordan was also an excellent bushman and an enthusiastic soldier. He gained his third stripe in Palestine' (The Age; Wed 19 Feb 1941). In 1940 in Melbourne, Charles married Olive (Pat) Raymond Hartley (b1917 in Melbourne, Victoria). Following Charles' death, Pat remarried and served in the WRANS (Stewardess; Service No:WR1089).
