Death
Source; National Advocate (Bathurst, NSW) Tuesday 18 December 1917. Quarter-Master Sergeant Harold ('Masher') Upfold, writing to a friend in Bathurst referred at length to the ''death of Andy Flanagan, who was killed by a bomb dropped from a German 'Gotha' aeroplane, in the trenches in Belgium. Death, accord ing to the Quarter-Master Sergeant, was instantaneous, whilst at the same time several others were wounded. He also pays a tribute to the deceased, opining that a finer soldier or more popular soldier never lived. On behalf of his comrades he extended their sympathy to the departed soldier's wife and family and assures them that a wooden cross is being erected above the soldiers grave, the exact where-abouts of which will be communicated as soon as possible.
