Private Henry John Newman (Service No:4440) enlisted in the AIF on 16 January 1917 and was attached to 2nd Pioneer Battalion when he embarked with his Unit on 30 October 1917 from Melbourne for Devonport on board HMAT A6 Aeneas. Private Newman embarked from England for Fremantle on 3 March 1919 on board HT Euripides, and was attached to 2nd Pioneer Battalion at Discharge on 10 August 1919.
Harry was born in London, England in 1888, fifth of seven children of John James Newman (b1859 in Surrey, England) and Rebecca Jane Mason (b1859 in London, England). John (a French Polisher) and Rebecca married in 1879 in London, where they settled and raised their family.
Harry was an Omnibus Conductor in London when he married Nellie Louise Ashford (b1888 in Nottinghamshire, England) in 1909. Following the deaths of three infants, Harry and Nellie immigrated in 1913, arriving in Fremantle on board the Ajana, and settled in Perth, where Harry was an Iron Worker and Tin Smith. Following his Discharge from the Army, Harry and Nellie lived in Fremantle, where Harry was a Steward, before settling in Northam, where they raised their family and Harry was a Night Watchman/Caretaker. By the 1950s Harry and Nellie had moved to Perth, where Harry died in 1962 and Nellie in 1967.
