Stoker Baker enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy on 11 October 1940 and served at naval bases HMAS Rushcutter in Sydney and HMAS Cerberus in Victoria before joining HMAS Sydney following its return to Australia from the Mediterranean in February 1941. He was killed in action on 20 November 1941, when HMAS Sydney sank with the loss of all its crew, following the battle with the German raider Kormoran
