Son of Richard and Milcah Roach BALMER nee BUCHANAN; husband of Edith May BALMER nee BAKER, of Lismore, New South Wales, Australia.

His parents were former Mayor and Mayoress of Lismore. He was apprenticed as a joiner and cabinet maker to Brown and Jolly Ltd but when they closed he went into his own business.

He married nurse Edith BAKER (Peggy) in 1934.

John was survived by his wife Peggy, daughter Margaret, sisters Maisie Fletcher, Alice Tulk and brothers Bruce and Keith.

Death While Prisoner Of War
Word was received from the Minister for the Army yesterday that Driver Jack Balmer. A.I.F.. who enlisted in Lismore, where he had lived all his life, died of illness a prisoner of war in Japanese hands on June 9 last year. 
Driver Balmer was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dick Balmer, formerly well known Lismore residents. He was born at Lismore, and after receiving his education at the Lismore  Public School, was apprenticed as a joiner and cabinet maker to the firm of Brown and Jolly Ltd. When this firm closed its factory at South Lismore, Driver Balmer entered  business for a time on his own account.
He was taken prisoner at the fall of Singapore.
Driver Balmer married in Lismore Sister Pegey Baker, of Brisbane. Sister Balmer is at present attached to the nursing staff of the Lismore Base Hospital. In addition to his wife he  is survived by a daughter, Margaret. Brothers are Bruce (Lismore) and Keith (A.I.F.) Mrs. Col. Fletcher and Mrs. Ray Tulk of North Lismore are sisters.
