Biography contributed by Stephen Brooks

William Humphries gave his next of kin as his wife, Mrs Ethel Humphries, 21 Dally Street, Northcote, Victoria. He was badly injured by mustard gas during February 1918 and evacuated to England for several months to recover. William was the father of four children and his wife posted the following notice in the Melbourne Age, during September 1918.

HUMPHRIES.— Died of wounds in France on 18th August, Private William Humphries, 14th Battalion, age 36 years, dearly beloved husband of Mary Ethel, loving father of Ethel, Amy, Gordon, Ivy and little Elsie and Jean, both dead.

Dear Bill, who will never return.

One or the best. — Inserted by his sorrowing wife and little children.
