Son of R.E. Hayes of Chancery Lane, Melbourne Victoria

In November 1915 he was buried by a shell explosion and was unconscious for several days resulting in shell shock which brought on Neurasthenia

Commenced return to Australia on 29 January 1916 aboard HT Suffolk disembarking on 8 March 1916
