Daniel was the third of eight children of James Mahoney (born 1860 in Ireland) and Mary Mulcahy (born 1864 in Ireland). James (a Farmer) and Mary married in Gympie, QLD in 1890. and lived in Gympie, Toowoomba, Brisbane and at Gowry Junction on the Darling Downs.
Daniel was working as a Railway Porter when he enlisted in the AIF in September 1915. He served as a Gunner (Service No:15709) with 21st Howitzer Brigade and 2nd and 3rd Field Artliiery Brigades. He was hospitalised with Influenza in 1916, and Discharged in November 1919. Brothers Patrick Joseph (Service No:20842) and John Thomas (Service No:3404) served in WWI. John also served in WWII (Service No:Q227794) as did brother James Vincent (Service No:QX28684).
Daniel was working as a Shunter in Brisbane, QLD in 1921 when he married Margaret Mary Wilson (born 1902 in Brisbane, QLD. Following Margaret's death in 1931 Daniel remarried in 1937 - Dressmaker Veronica Eileen Meehan (born 1915 in Brisbane, QLD). Daniel and Veronica moved from Paddington to Ashgrove, where Daniel continued working as a Shunter until his Death in 1949, Veronica died in 1954.
