George Bray was a labourer living with his wife Barbara in Bankstown, NSW prior to the war. He enlisted in March 1941 and trained in Tamworth prior to embarkation from Sydney on 29th July 1941. George arrived in Singapore on the 16th August 1941 and was posted to the 2/18th Battalion as a reinforcement. George escaped the surrender of Singapore and along with many other allied servicemen and civilians arrived in Sumatra. He was believed to have been lost on the SS Ban Ho Guan, a Dutch ship sunk with all hands whilst attempting to evacuate from Sumatra to Java on the 28th February 1942, he was 24 at the time of his loss.
