The Japanese Transport Ship Tamahoko Maru was torpedoed and sunk by a US Navy Submarine off Nagasaki en-route from Sumatra with a cargo of Prisoners of War - many of whom drowned before any possibility of rescue and these men are commemorated on the Singapore Memorial

Of the 17 RAAF Personnel known to be on board, 14 died & 3 survived the sinking and the war - Warrant Officer Barnes 405034 / Corporal Downie 34225 / Johnson 2301 (enlisted 1936, discharged 1965 #A3872) - those killed were:
