One of eight children of Thomas Kelly and Sarah Kelly. Educated at St. Josephs Schools and Christian Brothers School at Bathurst. Of quiet disposition, never known to raise a quarrel. Quietly determined when he enlisted to see it through, despite all hardships. Fond of reading and study, had an excellent character.

Upon leaving school was employed by Messrs. Preen and Co. before joining the ironmongery (hardware) department of Messrs. Anthony Hordern in Sydney. He had been two years and nine months on active service in France.

Harry Kelly was killed in Corbie (about 3 miles north of Villers-Bretonneux) during a conflict known as the First Battle of Villers-Bretonneux.
