Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Son of Harold John and Ruby Adelaide Candish, of Wallsend, New South Wales, Australia.

H. J. Candish of Cowper-street, Wallsend, has been reported missing after R.A.F. air operations over Germany on the night of May 4. He was a member of a Lancaster bomber  crew. Sergeant Candish, who is in his 22nd year, completed his training in England. Before going to England, he was in New Zealand, following the earlier stages of his training, in  Victoria and South Australia. On the R.A.A.F. reserve list, he was called up for enlistment in July, 1941, and went overseas about a year later.

Before enlisting he was employed in his father's service station. He was educated under his father, formerly a schoolmaster, and later at Maitland Boys' High School.
