FIRST WESTMEAD MAN TO BE DECORATED
First Westmead man to receive a military decoration in this war is Pilot-Officer John Hamilton Carter, who has een awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal for courage and efficiency. He held the rank of flight-sergeant when the award was made.
The official citation, received by his wife, states:
"Flight-Sergeant Carter, has participated in many successful operations against enemy trains, mechanical transport and road and railway facilities. He has consistently displayed courage, skill and efficiency of a high order.
"On one occasion in July, 1944, he effectively attacked a train and railway bridges, but during the attack his aircraft was damaged and he flew a long distance to complete a successful landing under most difficult circumstances. "The safe returning of his-aircraft was undoubtedly due to his skill and determination."
Pilot-Officer Carter is the eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Carter, of Elizabeth-street, Westmead. He was employed at Waddingtons Ltd., Clyde, before joining the R.A.A.F.
